Chapter Thirteen

December 31, 1821

It had been four days since Emmaline had given him the astonishing news that she was carrying his child.

Since then, he’d given her space as she’d requested. He didn’t wish to further damage their fragile relationship by charging in and saying something stupid. Or rather, saying something stupid in addition to what he already had. Yet they would need to talk and probably more sooner than later. Ushering in the New Year tonight with her would be the perfect setting. He truly hoped her anger had faded.

In the interim, she’d gone out to meet with Ambassador Davenport and Miles had been hard pressed to give her that freedom without accompanying her. After the events with the gunman at the church, a fierce protectiveness for her had gripped him, more than usual, making him want to be everywhere she was if only to keep the world at bay and ensure the life within her had a chance.

It was silly and irrational, but the incredible knowledge still held him in awe.

They’d come together in erotic fashion twice, and neither of them had worried about future consequences due to her history of not conceiving with her two previous husbands. He chuckled. Not that they would have abstained even if that had been a concern. Mutual need had been too strong and the emotion at that last joining had been too high. Of course, from all accounts, the men had died early on in their marriages with her and perhaps timing had been off or fate hadn’t seen fit to grant a child from those unions.

And now...

A foolish smile curved his mouth as he sipped a cup of tea. Now there was the promise of a babe in the offing, perhaps in the early summer. Which meant he needed to set his affairs in order, and the quicker the better. He refused to have the child born a bastard without his name. He also refused to acknowledge the tiny thrill that raced up his spine, for the baby might be a boy to carry on the Archewyne title and name.

The sound of a masculine throat being cleared at the door to the Gold Parlor yanked him out of his musings. Miles looked up. Peterson stood in the frame with a scowl. He stifled a sigh. Of late, his valet-turned-friend had been decidedly grumpy. “Good morning, my good man. How goes it with you?”

“Well, despite the circumstances.” He held up an ivory envelope. “This just arrived for you.”

Miles waved him forward then laid his teacup in its saucer and took the missive from the valet when he came close. “What do you mean, despite the circumstances?” He glanced at the bold handwriting that bore his name. The duke’s seal proclaimed it from Rathesborne and no postmark meant it had comes via special courier.

“The loss of the crown, my lord. It’s a devastating blow to your efforts.” Was that a smirk on his face?

“It is, I agree, but there’s nothing to be done about it now unless I’m successful in tracking the faction’s leader and bringing him in.
